Internet obsessed? That's okay!

Teenagers' Internet Socializing Not a bad thing

some ranting about the Internet...
Studying the internet and the way it effects our lives is a constantly unfolding, fascinating topic. How do adult perceptions of time spent on the internet differ from teenagers who have grown up always knowing the Internet, and therefore have a deeper understanding of it? How has the Internet changed the way we interact with each other? Why are many people obsessed with facebook? Do social internet experiments (like facebook and myspace) create a desire in young adults to be constantly connected? Or aware of what is happening in each other's lives on a more consistent basis? Do people present themselves differently on the Internet than in real life? Are you more likely to defy certain norms via facebook than you ever would in real life? What might be the potential effects of being able to be constantly in contact with other human beings?!

I think the interesting thing about Facebook and MySpace is the vanity and narcisim that goes into creating these pages. There's an inherit need to be "known" or "discovered" in humans, which makes since. This world is so huge that we can't help but feeling small and insignificant. Things like Facebook allow for us to declare and define oursleves, to "say our name to an admiring bog". Its a nonpersonal way of displaying yourself without rejection. I think using the internet to showcase yourself is a novelty of the 21 century. It also for us to put ourselves out there without really interacting with people, which can be a terrifying ordeal if you're rejected. But it comes with a cost. Now, becuase we are used to interactions online and able to manipuate im language and emocons better than their own presence.
